Lets face it. A lot of us have a wardrobe stuffed so full you’re not even sure if you could fit another pair of underwear in it.  The time has officially come to clear it out! It may seem overwhelming, but we are going to teach you how to clean your wardrobe like a professional with these 6 easy steps.

Step 1. Cleanliness is the key to style.

If you find yourself saying “I have nothing to wear” with a closet full of things, odds are you are just overwhelmed by your choices. This means you need to clear out the old and make room for your favorite pieces. This also means that you need a well-maintained closet. Keep it organized in a way that you can see all of your pieces. When I clear out my closet, I try on every single piece to ensure that I like it. I often ask myself: Does it spark joy? Am I excited to wear it? If I was in a store dressing room right now, would I purchase this piece of clothing? If I say “No” to any of these questions, then I act like a professional wardrobe stylist and get rid of it!

Step 2. Does it fit my body well?

No one wants to wear clothing that doesn’t properly fit them. It makes you feel flustered and frustrated. If you’re like me when you put on a few extra pounds, you know that is okay! Because you still love yourself for who you are. So, try on your clothes and ask yourself “How does it fit? Do I like myself in it?” If certain things aren’t fitting you, just tuck them away for now making room for what does. This will eliminate you getting frustrated in the morning while picking out what to wear.

Recess for a few months or half a year and back to those same questions. After couple of times, you’ll know what needs to go.

Step 3. Say goodbye to trends in your wardrobe that are not in style!

Remember those jeggings you have stuffed in the back of your wardrobe? Yes, it is time to part with them. Go through your closet and find any items that may be out of style, and ask yourself, is it current? Do people wear it? Do I like it? Would I wear these if they fit me properly? If the answer is “No” then ditch these clothing items!

Many people feel guilty for throwing out clothes or anything that’s still in good, or at least dissent, shape. Well, that’s where you have do an analysis that will help you to understand what causes that guilt. Remember, most of our ancestors went through difficult period of time. Some escaped their country, in which they were born, during WW1 or WW2 to come to United Stated to make better life for themselves and their families when others were on a run to save their life from being prosecuted… Many came to America with almost no money nor belongings (actually, I am one of them, though it was just 13 years ago).

People put a lot of energy and effort to get where they are today and for many of their descendants that experience, those life stories, consciously or subconsciously, left a footprint in their DNA, their brain to save everything that you because it was earned with their hard work. But you have to realize, those times are over. You are most likely are sitting at a computer desk and working with your fingers, your brain and not doing labor intensive work. You have everything you currently need (your essentials, everything else is extra). Once that thought penetrates in your subconscious mind, it will be much easier to let go of things you have no need for. And if for some reason you continue to struggle with it, I am happy to help you – follow the link.

Step 4. The 12 month rule.

Look at the clothing you have in front of you. Are there pieces you haven’t worn in 6-12 months or more? Can you see yourself wearing them in the next 6 months? No? Then it is time to act professionally and get rid of this piece from your wardrobe.

I have a rule that saves my wardrobe & I am shearing it with you! My rule is that I MUST (no buts!!!) wear every piece of clothing, every pair of shoes, every bag I own at least 3 times a year!!! If I don’t, two things are going to happen:

  • If I love it & want to keep it in my closet, I ‘ll have girls night out; I ‘ll find an event to go to; will have a date with my man etc.
  • Gone forever!

This way I accomplish three things:

  1. I keep the pieces I love
  2. My outfits are often diverse and I have fun with different styles
  3. Excuse “I have no place to wear it” or anything of that nature doesn’t work for me. I find or I create the place to wear all of my clothes to!!!

I am in control of my own wardrobe and my life!

Step 5. What to wear with it?

Let’s say an article of clothing has successfully passed all four previous stages. It is in perfect condition, sits well, relevant and you want to wear it. In conclusion, next step is to make at least three complete outfits with this item. “Complete” means: from underwear to outerwear. Can’t do it? Therefore, you will not be grabbing for something that is hard to wear and hard to match with other items in your closet. It is time to part with it!

Step 6. Wardrobe optimization.

After you have completed all 5 of these steps and you have clothing that you are excited to keep in your closet, it is time to organize. Stepping into a closet with items thrown around and no real organization can be very stressful. You want to organize it in a way that makes sense. All outerwear in one area, all bottoms in another, all long sleeve tops together, and if you really want to go crazy you could even organize by color! This process may take you a bit longer than anticipated, but trust me – it is worth it!

Now that your wardrobe is professionally done and organized, you can put together an outfit with no problem! It is so much easier to see what you have when it is well maintained. Take those bags of clothes you have and donate them to Goodwill, or get money for the items by sending them in to ThredUp! Your final step is to stop into PEcado and get a wardrobe refresh! Most importantly, replenish the items your wardrobe is lacking or you have been eyeing for a while. Therefor, come check out our new inventory that will have you ready for the summer!
